Recently, I’ve had several clients ask me my thoughts on Equip Prime Protein and Just Ingredients protein powders. I personally have and enjoy both, but they aren’t as similar as some people think.
For those looking for a clean, simple, and trustworthy protein powder that won’t upset their tummy, these are two brands that come up often. Let’s chat about it!
P.S. I also compared Just Ingredients to Clean Simple Eats (another common comparison) if you’re interested in hearing my thoughts on those two clean protein powder options.

Comparing the Two Brands
When I get questions about these two brands and how they stack up, I’m not surprised as both have been marketed as “clean” and gentle on the tummy. If you’re someone who is sensitive to whey protein or artificial sweeteners/ingredients.
That said, there are actually a lot of differences between Just Ingredients and Equip’s Prime Protein powder. For starters, Equip is a beef protein powder, and Just Ingredients is mostly whey but also contains protein from 3 other sources (pea protein, chia seed protein, and collagen). For those who specifically need a whey protein alternative, Equip is going to be your best bet between these two options.

Beef protein tends to be very gentle on the stomach and digestive system, which is why Equip Prime Protein was recommended to me in the first place. However, Just Inrgedients also has a great reputation for being gentle and tolerable as well, thanks to the fact that it doesn’t contain casein, which is known to give some people tummy troubles.
Both Equip and Just Ingredients are incredibly minimalist when it comes to ingredients. Equip’s chocolate protein has just 3 ingredients: beef protein isolate, stevia (for sweetness), and cocoa powder. The other flavors are just as simple from an ingredients perspective. Comparatively, Just Ingredients has a few more ingredients, but that’s just because they added additional protein sources to their formula for a robust amino acid profile.
Both brands are 3rd-party tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and more, which is a major sign of a high-quality supplement brand. For context, supplements are not required to be 3rd party tested, so most brands don’t pay the extra money to do it, which also means there could be some icky ingredients in your supplements that you’re unaware of. Just Ingredients and Equip 3rd party test all of their products so you can feel confident that you’re consuming a clean product.
From a cost perspective, Just Ingredients and Equip are very similar - Just Ingredients costs $59.99 per bag, and Equip costs $63.99. Both brands offer a discount for subscribing to monthly shipments, which is a good option for those who use their protein powder daily and don’t want to run out.
My Experience With Just Ingredients
I first tried Just Ingredients a few years back after seeing some buzz on social media about it. I loved the idea of a really clean protein powder, and after following Just Ingredients on Instagram, l definitely wanted to give it a try.
I started off by purchasing a multi-pack of sample sizes, I was able to choose a handful of different flavors that I thought I might like. Once they arrived, I started testing them. I found all of the flavors to be decent. They were not the best-tasting protein powder I’d ever had, but also not the worst. Vanilla is, hands down, my favorite flavor.

nourishing, real, natural protein powder
It quickly become clear that I needed to shake vigorously for the powder to fully blend, which is fine. Even after a vigorous shake, there’s still usually some sediment left behind. I attribute this to the lack of added ingredients that cause some protein powders to mix better than others.
I like the macros on Just Ingredients protein powders with around 24g of protein and 140 calories per scoop. I have used it in protein shakes made with ice and in baked recipes, and everything has come out tasting great. Again, not the best flavor or texture, but it’s also not terrible, and the fact that I know I’m ingesting really high-quality ingredients makes it worth it.

These days, I order Just Ingredients (usually the vanilla flavor) from time to time when I want to switch up my protein powder. It’s definitely on my list of top choices and one that I will rotate in frequently.

My Experience With Equip Prime Protein Powder
I was first introduced to Equip’s protein powder by my doctor, who suggested that I take a break from using whey protein powder for a while to see if it improved my gut health. I was a bit skeptical of a beef protein powder and was also convinced that it wouldn’t taste very good because it was so “healthy.”
I ordered a full-sized bag of the chocolate flavor right away because they didn’t have any samples to try and because my doctor highly recommended it, and I trust her. My first thought was that it actually tasted way better than I had imagined it would, and the texture wasn’t too bad, either.

Similarly to Just Ingredients, you really have to shake it up good to get everything to mix in there, and you’ll still see some traces of it on your glass after drinking it. Equip actually has a note on their packaging that states this is totally normal and a reflection of the fact that they don’t add any extra binders to their protein powder (which is apparently what others use to fix this problem).
Overall, I was really impressed with the ingredients, macros (21g protein, 100 calories), taste, and texture of Equip Prime Protein. I have only tried the chocolate flavor thus far. I like this protein powder mixed with a cup of unsweetened almond milk best.

Final Thoughts
Both Just Ingredients and Equip Prime Protein are fantastic options for a clean protein powder that contains ingredients that you can feel good about putting into your body. If you’re deciding between the two, I would say that the biggest determining factor should be which protein source is best for you.
Equip is a beef protein powder, so if you’re looking for a whey protein powder alternative, this is your best bet. On the other hand, if you’re fine with whey protein and just want a cleaner option, I would go with Clean Simple Eats.
If I had to choose between these two brands, I would choose Just Ingredients because I like the flavor and texture slightly better, and they have more flavors to choose from.
