Why hiya or grüns kids greens?

It’s simple - we’re talking about two brands here that are innovating the way kids take greens supplements. Grüns are yummy gummies, while hiya is a delicious chocolate milk flavor.

One brand (hiya) performs rigorous third-party testing to ensure each batch goes through the gauntlet, while grüns still checks the box with standard third-party testing.

And then you have, what I absolutely love in a brand, focus. Hiya focuses on kids supplements, while grüns focuses on greens.

But before you go shopping and purchasing a greens supplement for your youngster, ask yourself a few questions:

  • Does my kid need a greens supplement?
  • What should I look for?
  • What should I avoid?

I asked three dietitians to help me with these questions to provide expert insight. I’ll share that with you after the key decision making factors.

And, of course, there are a few differences between the two, which I’ll cover in this detailed comparison.

Key Decision Making Factors

  • Sugar

  • Savings

  • Quality

  • Form

Do you care about sugar content?

If your child’s sugar intake matters to you, you’ll want to highly consider hiya Kids Greens, as there is zero-sugar in it.

Grüns Kids Greens gummies, on the other hand, has two options to choose from - a “Low Sugar” option and a “Sugar-Free” option. The Low Sugar option contains 7 grams of sugar per serving, which is 6 gummies. The Sugar-Free option contains 0.5 grams of sugar per serving, again 6 gummies.

Does Your Child Need A Greens Supplement?

The reality is that kids who eat a nutritious diet don’t necessarily need a greens supplement. But, what if your kid is a picky eater? I asked Lauren Mahesri, RDN, expert in kids nutrition, and founder of The Pediatric Dietitian what her thoughts were on this question.

Here’s what she had to say,

“In short, most kids do not need to be taking a greens powder. Kids (and adults) often can get all the vitamins and minerals they need from food.

However, if you have a child with extreme picky eating that has limited their food intake of entire food groups, a nutritional supplement is helpful.”

Jordan Anthony, Registered Dietitian at Ahara, chimed in on the importance of talking to your pediatrician when considering any supplement for your child.

“This is a decision a parent should make after consulting with their pediatrician and considering any other vitamins or supplements they may be taking. Little bodies need much smaller quantities of key vitamins and minerals, and greens supplements on top of a daily multivitamin may be too much of a good thing.”

Balance is key, and Jordan’s answer raises more questions on safety of consumption. These are our kids we’re talking about here.

Are Greens Supplements Safe For Kids To Take?

The only people that can answer this question are experts in their field, such as dietitians or doctors.

According to Mahesri and Matt Rogers, Registered Dietitian at Tropical Oasis, greens supplements for kids are generally safe, as long as they check the necessary boxes.

Mahesri told me, “They are safe for kids as long as the supplement does not include excessive amounts of vitamins and minerals or include high volumes of artificial sweeteners.”

And Rogers agrees, saying, “Ultimately, it is generally safe for kids to take greens powders or gummies. You want to make sure to follow the guidelines of the product and practice moderation, plus you may want to contact your child’s doctor first just to make sure the product you are considering is safe.”

That last point is critical for parents to take action on, and that is to talk to your pediatrician and have an open dialogue on which products you're looking at. This way, you can run it by your doctor and get the stamp of approval.

What Should Parents Look For?

  • Quality

  • Brand

  • Customer Reviews

Look for Quality Traits

I rate quality on the types of ingredients used and above and beyond third-party testing procedures. I look at where the brand sources their ingredients, where the product is actually manufactured and I look for money-back guarantees.

Lauren Mahesri urges parents to look for a clear ingredient list. “Parents should be looking for a variety of vitamins and minerals coming from real food. Rather than "extracts" or "blends", we want to see a clear ingredient list with food you recognize! Also, in any kid's nutritional supplement, you want to see some vitamin D, calcium, and iron.”

All About grüns Cubs Superfoods Green Gummies

grüns kids greens gummies

Grüns was created by a dad who wanted better nutrition for his kids. He quickly realized that other parents were dealing with the same issue that their kids were not getting enough vegetables in their diet. He created grüns, which has two products at the moment - grüns Adults and grüns kids - both are in gummy form.

This product is gaining A LOT of momentum and is becoming very popular amongst parents, mainly because kids like gummies, and parents like myself know that gummies are much more convenient than scooping and stirring a greens powder. What a mess.

It’s conveniently available at amazon, but you can claim a 53% off discount on their official website if you give them your email address. Obviously they’ll be marketing to you if you opt in.

The cost at amazon is $57 and it’s a 4 week supply, however there’s not a 30-day money back guarantee here, like they have on their official website.

The cost of grüns for kids on their official website is $49.99, also a 4 week supply, with a 30-day money back guarantee. You’re also looking at a $25% off forever offer and free 2-day shipping. Kind of a no-brainer to get it at the brand’s site over amazon.

The customer reviews couldn't be further apart on two sides of the rating scale. At amazon, grüns for kids has a 3.8 out of 5 star rating (only 5 customer reviews at the time of writing this, but 500 customers have purchased in the last month), while their official website has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars with 100,000+ members.

Who to believe? I’ll share our honest experience in a bit.

The Formula and Testing Procedures

supplement facts for grüns kids greens gummies

Grüns for kids has a very unique formula and it goes beyond just veggies. You’re looking at the following ingredients inside these tasty gummies:

  • Whole veggies
  • Whole fruits
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Adaptogens
  • Antioxidants
  • Prebiotics
  • Herbs
  • Super mushrooms

Whether you care or don't care about your child’s sugar intake, grüns offers two options: regular, which has 7 grams of sugar per serving, or sugar-free, which still has 0.5 grams of sugar per serving, but it’s close to 0.

I wanted “The Pediatric Dietitian” Lauren Mahesri to take a look at the product label and provide her insights, she happily did it for us. Here’s what she had to say about it:

“The grüns kids greens formula has higher amounts of almost all vitamins and minerals added. You can see that nearly all are above the daily recommended intake, which isn't always a good thing.

When people consume more vitamins than our body needs, we will either excrete it out (aka expensive pee), or store it in fat (which isn't good long term).

I would only recommend taking this supplement for kids above age 4, as their nutrient needs increase and are more relevant to this supplement.”

What’s Our Experience Been Like?

Ordering grüns on their official website was a breeze. We were able to get the marketed discount on our first order, which is usually an ongoing sale. Our order consisted of a grüns for adults and a grüns for kids.

Our grüns for kids package arrived in 3 days after we ordered it in a very cool looking, brandable box. Here's an image of the package:

Inside the box was a large bag, and inside the large bag are individualized packets... the snack packs.

We were all very excited to try grüns out because of all the hype that's been building up with influencers on social media. Were they as good as everyone claimed?

I grabbed two kids snack packs and handed them to our kids. They opened it up very easily, reached in the snack pack, grabbed a gummy bear and started chewing it.

The first reaction?

Both of my kids LOVED them! In fact, they asked for more without knowing they were greens, vitamins and superfoods.

Since that first day taking grüns, my kids ask about them every day. It's been a few weeks of taking them, but this is definitely an elite greens supplement for kids.

The individual snack packs combined with a fruity taste make them extremely convenient. Props to grüns for making these - my kids love them and they are 100% legit. Tami (mom) covered a more in-depth look at our experience with gruns kids gummies - read it if you want to learn more.

All About Hiya Daily Greens + Superfoods

hiya kids greens

Similar to grüns, hiya was created by two dads who were fed up with sugar-filled multivitamins for kids. They saw an opportunity and ran with it, creating arguably the healthiest kids vitamin at the time.

Since their kids vitamin launch, they then created a few more products, like the hiya probiotic for kids, a sleep aid for kids (Bedtime), an Iron vitamin, their Immune vitamin, and now a kids greens.

Hiya kids greens are in powdered form and you mix it with milk. It’s a chocolate flavor and the idea is to have it taste like chocolate milk, plus it gives kids vitamin D. Pretty genius idea if you ask me.

What’s more is that there is zero-sugar, which is a staple for all hiya kids supplements.

All of their products are only available on their official website, and they always run a 50% off for first-time customers.

Hiya Kids Daily Greens + Superfoods costs $54 per month, but with the 50% off discount, you can try it out for $27. Just know that after the first month, the cost is $54 per month.

Like their kids vitamin product, hiya kids greens comes with a reusable canister with decorative stickers. Kids love to design their bottles with their name or any of the cool health-themed stickers that are included in the box.

This has always been a unique angle that hiya takes, as they make it fun and cool for kids to be healthy.

The Formula and Testing Procedures

supplement facts for hiya kids greens

Hiya Kids Daily Greens + Superfoods is a very unique formula consisting of 55 whole-food ingredients, which is one of the key factors to look for according to Registered Dietitian Lauren Mahesri.

“The Hiya Greens formula includes vitamins and minerals made from real food, which is a plus!

And although it does not include any iron, it recommends mixing with milk which will provide an iron source and make up for some of the calcium that it's lacking.

It's also a great source of Vitamin D!”

They key nutrients include:

  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Protein
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphorus

And the four proprietary blends, that are specifically designed for kids are:

  • Greens
  • Digestion
  • Superfood
  • Core Development

It tastes like chocolate, but it has zero sugar. As mentioned before, zero sugar is the standard at hiya.

Third-party testing is what hiya prides themselves on. But not just the standard third-party testing that most brands conduct. Hiya tests every batch for heavy metals and microbials in a FDA-registered facility. Then, each batch is certified by independent labs to meet the strictest federal and state safety standards.

You really can’t find a better kids vitamins brand that rigorously tests like hiya does. It’s why you pay more, and iIt’s peace of mind for parents.

What’s Our Experience Been Like?

hiya kids greens packaging

Ordering on hiya's website was as simple as it gets. It's very well laid out and user friendly. We purchased a plethora of products, including hiya greens for kids.

The package arrived in a timely fashion, taking around 3 days. And in typical hiya fashion, the box and packaging is very cool.

Inside the greens box is a re-usable container. Underneath the container is the greens powder, which is in a zip lock supplement bag. And, underneath the greens powder is the decorative stickers to encourage creativity for the kiddos.

I opened up the greens powder bag, read the directions and prepared the drink for my kids.

The directions state to take one scoop of chocolate greens and mix it with 8 oz of milk. I used whole milk, poured it into a glass and then poured a scoop of hiya greens.

pouring hiya greens powder in milk

I started mixing it with a butter knife, until I realized it wasn't going to mix very well.

Pro tip: Use a shaker bottle to get a smooth mix.

I then poured what I had mixed into a shaker bottle, one that I used to mix my protein shakes with.

I shook it up for about 10-15 seconds and poured it back into the glass. It was as smooth as pouring a real glass of chocolate milk.

hiya kids greens mixed chocolate milk

I was excited about this because if my kids liked it, they would also be getting extra vitamin D.

The smoothness had me wondering what it tasted like, so I took a sip and low and behold it was excellent! It really does taste like chocolate milk. There is a hint of greens to it, though.

My kids were next and took a sip, then took a few more sips, then drank the rest of it. They both said, "it tastes like chocolate milk."

Overall, hiya greens was a huge success for us. It's a great product and kudos to hiya for creating it.

Next, I’ll compare and contrast grüns Kids Greens and hiya Kids Greens across three key factors. Let’s get it going!

Comparing Formulas

  • Greens + Superfoods, Vitamin D, Calcium : hiya Kids Greens
  • Greens, Adaptogens, Vitamins, Minerals and Superfoods: grüns Kids Greens

Hiya’s greens formula has 55 whole-food ingredients consisting of important greens, superfoods, a digestive blend and a core development blend. The ingredients are mostly organic

Grüns’ greens formula has over 60 whole-food ingredients consisting of vitamins, minerals, superfoods, mushrooms, immune support (like Vitamin C) and a digestive blend (fiber and prebiotics).

Both grüns and hiya use organic ingredients and are similar in many ways. The main difference is that grüns have way more vitamins and minerals than hiya’s greens. But, one of the reasons for this is hiya already has a kids multivitamin, which is designed to take with their kids greens supplement. Grüns, on the other hand, is more of an all-in-one supplement.

Comparing Forms: Gummies vs Drink Mix, Big Difference

  • Fruity-Flavored Gummies: grüns Kids Greens
  • Chocolate Powder: hiya Kids Greens

Which form will your kid take?

It’s a really important question to ask because let’s face it, if you buy something over $50, which both of these kids greens products are, you’re going to want your kid to take it.

Grüns are in gummy form, yes, but your kid(s) will have to take 6 gummies per serving. This can be perceived in two different ways:

  1. Positive: 6 gummies acts like a gummy snack pack, you know like the Welch’s kids gummies? Kids love gummies, and if they replace the traditional gummy snack with grüns gummies they’re getting the best of both worlds - a healthy and tasty snack.
  2. Negative: 6 gummies are way too much, making it inconvenient to chew up all 6 of them. Will your kid eat all 6? It’s something to consider.

I can tell you from first-hand experience, my kids ALWAYS ask for more after they go through a grüns snack pack. They taste amazing, and it's very convenient.

Hiya Kids Greens, on the other hand, is a chocolate powder that you mix with milk, making it taste similar to chocolate milk. Having tasted this myself, I can tell you it doesn’t taste exactly like chocolate milk, but it’s pretty darn close. Hiya did an excellent job masking the greens flavor.

If your kiddo likes milk, hiya greens can be a realistic option, however, if your kid struggles drinking milk, like one of my kids does, it will be near impossible to get them to drink this product.

Comparing Price and Value: It’s A Close Race

  • $54/month: hiya
  • $49.99/month: grüns

Hiya always runs a 50% off discount for first time buyers. This is a one-time discount. After the first month, you’ll have to pay the full price, monthly. For their Kids Greens + Superfoods, the price is $54. For first time customers, it’s $27. This is for a 30-day supply, which means each serving costs $0.90 for your first month and $1.80 for the months after.

Although grüns Kids Greens is conveniently available at amazon, it also costs more there coming in at $57. I’m not sure why this is the case.

On their official website, it costs $49.99 for one kid.

As far as servings, this is for a 28-day supply. At $49.99 per month, each serving costs $1.78, which is $0.02 less than hiya.

The pricing is very similar, yes, but you’ll have to decide if you want an all-in-one supplement or a separate greens + superfoods supplement for your kiddo. If you go for separate (hiya), you’ll be paying more (a multivitamin and a greens), but you’ll be paying for rigorous third-party testing procedures and peace of mind.

If you go with grüns Kids Greens, you’re potentially saving money in the long run as far as not buying a multivitamin because it already has the essential vitamins and minerals that can fill nutritional gaps. It’s still pricey, but the value is that you get more out of it.

Which Is Better: Grüns Kids Greens or Hiya Kids Greens?

Hiya Kids Greens + Superfoods is the better choice if your kid drinks milk, you value rigorous third-party testing procedures, and your kid needs extra greens in their diet.

On the other hand, if you want an all-in-one greens + multivitamin supplement, and your kid likes gummies, grüns CUBS is the best choice.

kids ready to take their hiya and gruns greens

Conclusion

Both grüns and hiya kids greens are excellent products for kids who need to fill nutritional gaps with vegetables.

Like our experts talked about earlier, it’s important to talk to your pediatrician to see if your child would benefit from a kids greens supplement. Remember, they might not need one.

To sum it all up, the main differences are:

  • Quality and Testing Procedures: It’s very clear that hiya remains ON TOP of the third-party testing procedures vs grüns’ standard third-party testing.
  • Sugar Content: The only zero-sugar option on the table is hiya. Grüns has a “sugar-free” version, but it still has 0.5 grams of sugar per serving.
  • Formula: Although they are both “greens” formulas, grüns includes essential vitamins and minerals, whereas hiya does not because they already have a multivitamin product that focuses on that.

I truly believe both of these products are great choices, regardless of the one you choose.

If you go with grüns for your kids, you’re getting a value-packed all-in-one supplement in gummy form. And, if you decide to go with hiya Kids Greens, you’re paying for the gold standard in quality in chocolate milk form - that’s the main difference.
